2C-1 Solar Light Cap – A Legionnaire's Hat for Mountaineering

Today I’m reviewing the 2C solar light cap. I discovered this incredibly innovative invention many years ago. I tried various different headwear systems to block out the harsh high-altitude sun, and this design stands out for its combination of practical protection and built-in lighting.

What is the 2C Solar Light Cap?

The 2C solar light cap is a legionnaire-style hat with a built-in LED light powered by a small solar panel on the crown. It charges in daylight — even overcast conditions at altitude — and provides hands-free lighting for camp tasks, navigation, and early morning starts.

Why It Works for Mountaineering

At altitude, UV radiation is significantly more intense than at sea level. Protection for your face, neck, and ears is essential for multi-day expeditions. Traditional caps only protect the face; the legionnaire flap of the 2C covers the neck and ears too.

The built-in light is a genuinely useful feature for:

  • Pre-dawn starts from high camps
  • Tasks around camp after sunset
  • Inside tents when you don’t want to hunt for a head torch

Build Quality and Weight

The cap is lightweight and packs flat. The solar panel is durable enough to handle the folding and stuffing that gear inevitably takes on expedition.

Verdict

A well-designed piece of kit that solves two problems (sun protection and lighting) in one compact product. Worth considering as part of your high-altitude sun protection system.
