Few can argue with the beauty of such a wild and wonderful display of nature as the Nepalese Himalaya. Once amongst these giants the chaos and clutter of Kathmandu are completely forgotten.

Arriving in Nepal

The approach to any Himalayan expedition begins in Kathmandu — a city of extraordinary contrasts. Ancient temples sit beside modern hotels; taxis navigate streets shared with cows and rickshaws. The city’s energy is overwhelming at first, but there’s magic in it once you find your footing.

Acclimatisation in the Khumbu

Before attempting Ama Dablam, acclimatisation in the Khumbu Valley is essential. We spent several days exploring the trails around Namche Bazaar at 3440m, including a day hike to Khumjung village and the Everest View Hotel at 3880m.

The views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam from these vantage points are reason enough to visit Nepal — regardless of any mountaineering ambitions.

Ama Dablam — First Impressions

Seeing Ama Dablam for the first time from the Khumbu trail is a moment that stays with you. The mountain rises with extraordinary elegance — a near-perfect pyramid with two ridges that sweep down like the arms of the deity it’s named after.

At 6812m, Ama Dablam is technically demanding by any standard. But it’s also achingly beautiful, and that beauty draws climbers from around the world.
